National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) President Doug Bibby took part in a White House Council on Eliminating Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing on Friday, November 1. The roundtable event, which brought together housing leaders from public and private sectors for a solutions-focused discussion, was chaired by HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson who has been appointed by President Trump to lead the administration’s housing affordability efforts.

NMHC X BISNOW NMHC and Key Lawmakers Discuss Affordability at Bisnow Multifamily Annual Conference NMHC President Doug Bibby moderated a panel, “Housing Policy and the Affordability Crisis” at the Bisnow Multifamily Annual Conference (BMAC) East on Thursday, November 7. The panel included three major power players in the discussion surrounding the housing affordability crisis; Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Senator Todd Young (R-IN), and Alfonso Costa, Jr., the Deputy Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
GSES AND HOUSING FINANCE REFORM FHFA Releases Annual Housing Report on the GSEs The FHFA released the Annual Housing Report for the 2018 calendar year that provides an evaluation of the performance of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the Enterprises) in meeting a number of goals and objectives. The release of this report comes just days after the Agency’s release of their New Strategic Plan and Scorecard for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
GSES AND HOUSING FINANCE REFORM FHFA Releases Strategic Plan and Scorecard for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) released The 2019 Strategic Plan for the Conservatorships of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as the 2020 Scorecard for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and Common Securitization Solutions laying the framework for the GSEs in 2020. The Strategic Plan provides detail on how FHFA plans to end conservatorship and outlines FHFA’s three key objectives.
TERRORISM INSURANCE House Committee Advances TRIA Extension The House Financial Services Committee voted 57-0 on a bipartisan compromise that would extend the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) program for 7 years, require a study on the cyber terrorism market and expand an ongoing study to also determine the availability and affordability of TRIA coverage for places of worship. In advance of the vote, NMHC and NAA, as part of the Coalition to Insurance Against Terrorism (CIAT), sent a letter of strong support to the Committee urging passage of this legislation. The legislation must be considered by the full House before being sent to the Senate for consideration.
EB 5 PROGRAM EB-5 Legislation Introduced in Senate to Preserve Program Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mike Rounds (R-SD) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the Immigrant Investor Program Relief Act (S. 2778) this week, after months—and even years—of negotiations on a long-term reauthorization of the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program.
FINANCE AND CAPITAL MARKETS NMHC, NAA and Coalition Express Concern Over Corporate Transparency Efforts NMHC and NAA led a coalition of other commercial real estate trade groups this week in weighing in with the Senate Banking Committee and other key Senate leaders to express concern over a variety of corporate transparency legislative proposals meant to aid law enforcement in their investigation of shell companies engaged in money laundering, tax evasion and terrorism financing.
