2018 NMHC OPTECH Recap
Opening keynote speaker, Melissa Schilling, NYU professor, author and one of the world’s leading experts on innovation.

Twenty years have passed since the first NMHC OPTECH, and this year’s conference and exposition was testament to its continued growth. Last week’s event in Orlando was the largest on record, drawing more apartment executives and technology partners than ever before.

NMHC OPTECH continues to be the place to go for exciting industry news, new product launches and important industry research. This year we were pleased to announce the winner of our inaugural NMHC Innovation Challenge and also release the 2018 NMHC/Kingsley Package Survey—just in time for the holiday season. Moreover, we had 10 startups join the more than 130 exhibitors in our dynamic expo area and 10 companies took to the Marketplace Stage to tell attendees about new product offerings.

Our programming continues to be best in class, with thought-provoking keynote speakers Josh LinknerMelissa Shilling and Laura Vanderkam and numerous industry leaders sharing their perspectives on macro-level issues like tech innovation and disruption, as well as tackling the nuts and bolts of business and property operations

NMHC thanks all sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and attendees for their contributions to another successful OPTECH. We will see everyone next November in Dallas for the 2019 NMHC OPTECH.

Top Trends
Massive investment is driving growth in the PropTech market. But innovation in multifamily can be tricky and there are some rules to follow.
Digital technologies are revolutionizing multifamily marketing and sales. While these tools are shaping up to improve effectiveness, they require a strong focus on the customer and their decision-making process.
Connectivity as a Core Competency
Amid improvements in Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity and smart-home tech growth, changing telecom policy and regulation could pose challenges.

There is growing recognition that sustainability programs are increasingly becoming an element of companies’ larger corporate social responsibility (CSR) frameworks.
Better Data Mining and Management
With so much data floating around, apartment firms need to be deliberate in their approaches to managing and protecting data systems and identifying specific areas for actionable intelligence.

Disrupt Yourself
If you loved the general session with executives from BH Management, Camden Property Trust, Greystar and Related Companies on the future of multifamily, check out the report that sparked the conversation. We've also got your cheat sheet on the takeaways.

There’s a reason it’s called multifamily skunkworks. The process to identify, test and roll-out new tech innovations can sometimes stink. But maybe it doesn’t need to. NMHC’s Innovation Committee offers thoughts on what tech companies need to know about multifamily and also how apartment firms slow down innovation
We captured all the best moments of the meeting, from featured speakers and engaging panels to the active exhibit hall, with our GameZone, Startups Center, Marketplace Stage and Meetups.
